This week in maths we have been playing a subtraction game called ‘Tumbling Towers.’
We had to build a tower using 10 unifix bricks. In order to rescue a princess in the tower we needed to make the tower smaller and smaller until we had no bricks left. Each person rolled a special dice which had only -1 or -2 on the sides. They needed to ‘take away’, ‘minus’ or’ subtract’ that number from their tower. The first person to tumble their tower to 0 was the winner! At the same time the children were encouraged to record their number sentence on a wipe board. E.g 10 – 2 = 8, etc. It was so frustrating for Kareem as he had 1 brick left and he said ” If I throw -2 I won’t win.” He knew that you cannot take 2 from 1. Luckily he rolled -1.
