As part of their ‘Myths and Legends’ topic, Year 5 had the exciting opportunity to visit one of London’s most prestigious museums, ‘The British Museum’.

To start the day, they took part in a ‘Greek Myths’ workshop. This involved spotting characters on Greek pottery using visual clues (Hermes has boots with wings, a hat and a travellers staff), using story math to work out which story was depicted on the pottery (see picture gallery) and re-telling the well known Greek Myth, ‘Odysseus and the Cyclops’ from Homer’s famous poem ‘The Odyssey’. This will really help Year 5 with their writing outcome this week, which is based on that very story!

After a sunny lunch on the museum’s lawn, the children visited the ‘Greek Life’ gallery and completed their activtiy booklets using the various artefacts in the room. They learned about the 12 Labours of Herakles (who is known as Hercules in Roman mythology).

As they worked so hard, we then had time to go for a wander, appreciating the invredible architechture of the museum and visiting other galleries. We particularly liked the ‘African Gallery’, which was vibrant and exciting.

Year 5 highly recommends The British Museum, and entry is free all year!!
