What a week! So much has happened and both Callum and Ella have been seriously happy with what the children have achieved.
Literacy
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, the children were doing their end of unit story. They used the model below:
“Are we nearly there yet?” whined Tamwar, as the car slowed at what felt like the hundredth junction. “Nearly,” replied Neetu, indicating left. They had been travelling along narrow, winding roads for nearly an hour and it didn’t feel like they’d got anywhere. “We’re here,” cried Neetu, pulling into a slip road.
Climbing out of the car and stretching her legs, Sinita groaned. “But I don’t see anything. What are we here for, mummy?”
“I told you, this is the place that Grandpa Chatterji brought us to, when Sanjay and I were little, to see the poppies.” Tamwar and Sinita looked up at their mother, dubiously.
“Oh! Follow me,” sighed Neetu, trying to ignore the moans of her small children. Tamwar and Sinita traipsed along behind their mother, down a narrow pathway leading to the disused railway track. As they strolled onwards, the silk-like breeze ruffled their hair, while daisies nodded gently as if talking to one another. Looming ahead, a round black hole watched them like an ominous eye. Suddenly, Tamwar raced ahead, shouting, “Come on, let’s look in the tunnel!” Sinita approached but paused on the edge between bright sunlight and the black darkness of the tunnel, listening to the echoes of Tamwar’s lingering voice. Taking her daughter by the hand, Neetu smiled reassuringly ridding Sinita of any worries. Together, they entered.
Far, far ahead at the end of the darkness, the children could see something round and silver gleaming in the distance. Tamwar no longer wanted to rush ahead. He hurried back to his sister and mother and they walked together, steadily towards the other end. Nearer and nearer they went. Nobody spoke. They were almost at the end of the tunnel, when suddenly, just as they were about to step out into the daylight, Neetu stopped.
Bursting with excitement,…
As an extra piece of home learning, maybe your child could write another version of the story at home or an alternate ending.
Maths
In maths, we’ve been looking a lot at decimals. We’ve been using a bead string to see how a tenth and hundredth compares to a whole. You may like to visit this website and ask them to show you 2 tenths, 33 hundredths, etc.
If you want to challenge, how could you use the string to add and subtract tenths and hundredths?
Topic
We’ve started a brand new topic: Pictures, Paintings and Photos. We’ve started looking at some in great detail and drawing our own pictures. We’ve even got a new display on the way! Photos to follow.
RE Day
We also had RE Day on Friday where we looked at Humanism. We now know what it is and what they believe in. We even focused on a baby naming ceremony and wrote our own recipe for it (which required a lot of imagination). A display is on its way too!
Homework
There are four pieces of homework this:
1. Mathletics – the new tasks have been set and hopefully they’ll be ready and working. It’s all to do with decimals. Remember to use a place value chart to help.
2. Bug Club
3. Research an artist (any artist that you particularly like!) and create a fact file. The more creatively made the better! Include famous pieces of art they created, when they were born, died, etc. The more detail the better.
Your own interpretation of a picture would be great too! Can y0u paint Starry Night, for example?
4. As photos are going to be a big part of the new topic, we’d love it if you took a photo of something special and that you’re proud of. We’d love to show them off in the classroom. As it’s easiest to take pictures on phones and tablets, you may want to email them to ict@brecknock.camden.sch.uk
