When life gives you lemons…

There’s a saying in Sicily that lemons are not real lemons unless they’re Sicilian. The land around Mount Etna, the Mediterranean climate, sunny hot days and cold nights, coupled with volcanic soil, gives the Sicilian lemon a typical sweetness and taste that is very difficult to find anywhere else in the world. Sicily grows all sorts of shapes and sizes of lemon.

Sicily class had great fun this week inventing their own signature Lemonade recipe using organic Sicilian lemons. After much trial and error, we decided on a recipe that was just to our taste- not too sweet and not too bitter! Here is our recipe if you would like to try some at home…

Sicily’s Signature Lemonade

Ingredients:

  • Sparkling water
  • 6 large Sicilian lemons
  • Caster sugar
  • Ice cubes

Method:

  1. First, juice 6 large lemons using a hand juicer until you have collected 250 ml of lemon juice.
  2. Next, pour the lemon juice into a measuring jug.
  3. After that, add 750ml of sparkling water to the juice to make 1 litre.
  4. Then, add 6 heaped tablespoons of caster sugar and stir until it is fully dissolved.
  5. Finally, pour the lemonade over ice and enjoy!
