As part of ‘Be the Best You Can Be’ week, Year 6 wrote a recount based on a buzzer winning shot by basketball extraordinaire Michael Jordan, who is a great ambassador of trying hard and learning from his mistakes. The children used a short clip, entitled ‘The Shot’, as inspiration for their writing—use the QR code to see the video. Here is Zaynab’s brilliant diary entry:
It was 100-99 to the Clevland Cavaliers; this was the most important game of the year and the match was on the line. ‘Bulls, Bulls, Bulls!’ The crowd were going wild, with only a few seconds left. Amazingly, I had scored an incredible 40 points but that wasn’t enough. I glanced up at the ticking clock and there was now only 8 seconds remaining. The crowd erupted in the stadium as I powered down to the foul line. I looked up. Now only 5 seconds. Our fans chanted the team. This was it, this was my time to shine.
At that moment, I caught an inbound pass from Brad Sellers. What should I do? Should I pass it to my team mates or keep it? The opposition fans waved their flags behind me and booed but I knew I could do it—I had hope in myself. I took a look back; now only 3 seconds left. I’ve always believed that if you put in all the hard work, the results will come. Some people want it to happen, some wish it could happen, I WILL make it happen.
Quickly, I dribbled towards line and the 6’7 defender, Craig Ehlo, who darkened my horizon from the right side. Sharply, I dummied and hung in the air until he was out of the way. Nervous but excited, I simply double clutched and sent the ball spinning towards the net. I threw my fists in the air—102-100 victory to The Bulls! Everyone was proud and so was I – All the hard work had paid off in style!
