Take yourself back to Ancient Greece… Where would you rather live? Athens or Sparta?

The children of Year 5 have been comparing and contrasting the lives of those in Athens and Sparta. Although the cities are not far from one another, they were ruled very differently. Sparta focussed primarily on war, did you know  seven year old boys had to join the army? Whereas, in Athens, boys had much more freedom, but the girls were forced to stay at home and were not allowed an education.

Both classes looked at the pros and cons of each city and debated which city they would rather live in. The girls preferred Sparta life because they were allowed to go to school and learnt to wrestle! However, the boys preferred Athens as they had the choice to join the army or not.
