In Year 1 we have been learning to compare, describe and solve practical problems involving measures.
Last week the children ordered themselves by height, from shortest to tallest, then conducted an investigation to find thigs that were ‘longer than’ or ‘shorter than’ body parts such as their arm, leg, foot and hand.
This week the children have been comparing objects by weight and deciding if an object is ‘heavier than’ or ‘lighter than’ another object using measuring scales. Some of the children had the challege of finding objects that were ‘lighter than’ 6 cubes BUT ‘longer than’ 4 cubes. They did a great job and realised that sometimes, larger objects can be quite light. For example they discovered that a piece of paper, a pecil, a large piece of fabric and a straw are all ‘light’ despite their size and length.
To encourage and support your child at home, here is some key vocabulary that we have been using in mathematics:
weight
height
length
longer
shorter
taller
heavier
lighter
longer than
shorter than
lighter than
heavier than
equal to
We have actions for most of these words, perhaps your child can teach them to you!
Happy measuring!
