The Year 1 classes watched some Olympic athletes in action, then practised their throwing skills out in the playground.
On Tuesday, we measured our throws using our own feet. However, we discussed how this could be a problem: we all have different size feet! So we talked about what else we could use to measure distance. We decided that our classroom rulers were too short, and it would take too long.
On Wednesday, we used metre sticks, measuring our throws to the nearest half metre.
We worked in threes, so that two children could measure, being careful to place a finger at the end of the metre stick, then move it along, and the third member of the team recorded on a whiteboard.
We each made a note of our longest and shortest throws.
