School Journey – Day 2

Day 2 of school journey was a roaring success. Despite the wet weather, everyone wrapped up in their waterproofs and made their way out into the field for the first mission – to follow the map to find the resources they were going to need for their shelter building and campfire bread baking. All teams succeeded in finding their tarpaulin, rucksack with rope and dry paper, bread dough and cooking fire sticks. Then it was off into the woods.

We split into 4 groups and each group had to forage the forest for wood and other things they could use to build a shelter. All the children got stuck in and helped each other out. Kevin, the Centre Leader, said at the end after throwing water over each shelter to try and test each teams construction that they were the best shelters he’d seen in a long while and would happily sleep in any one of them. The other centre leader, James, said Brecknock were the best group he’d worked with since he started at the centre.

While the groups built their shelters each group had a chance to try out some campfire cooking. The used the bread dough they had found earlier and were shown how to wrap it around the end of the cooking stick and then how to use the embers safely to bake the bread. It was very tasty!

In the afternoon, we split into two groups. One set went off to use their construction skills again to build models of their shelters using hacksaws and glue guns, while the rest went off to the low rope and tyre courses. Tomorrow they will switch.

Both groups did really well with some great teamwork on display in the tyre course and some very creative design ideas on display in the model building.

It’s the nightwalk tonight – everyone is very excited (and some a little nervous!) hoping the ‘Drop Bears’ aren’t out!
