This week Year 1 went on their final seasonal scavenger hunt at the Clock Tower Park. They were set the challenge of finding evidence that the season is changing from Spring into Summer.
“Wow! It looks totally different now!” commented Max (1M).
He made a great observation; it was so different to the skeleton trees and dead flowers we observed in the Winter months.
Year found many signs that summer is here, including:
- At least 10 different types of leaves, showing a huge variety of trees such as oak, sycamore, birch and horse chesnut)
- Many different types of grass
- Blooming flowers of many colours, shapes, sizes and textures
- Insects such as bumblebees, honeybees, ants, ladybirds and beetles
- Birds such as pigeons, blue tits, song thrushes and blackbirds
- Seed heads (we really like the fluffy ones we could blow!)
- Fruits beginning to grow on trees
- Berries, including the buds of blackberries
- Very brave and tame squirrels (we saw at least 6 eating seeds from the ground!)
Summer really is here and it was wonderful to observe and appreciate the new life that the warmer, wetter months have brought to our local area. 🙂
Over the next few weeks we will be learning much more about flowers and insects in our new topic too!
When you go out and about, look around to see what animals, trees, flowers and plants you notice.
